The entire family really enjoys traveling to stock shows across the country. In the past few years we have traveled thousands of miles to places such as South Dakota, Indiana, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Colorado, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and San Angelo to show Herefords. We have had successes and disappointments in the show ring but no matter what, we do it together as a family.
Most recently, we went to Kansas City for the Junior National Hereford Expo. Koby and Shelby both won the prospect award for their age group. Harley was 3rd high individual in the junior division for Livestock judging and her team, which Koby was also on, won 1st. Shelby and her team won the 1st place in the team marketing contest. What made this win special was the fact that Shelby wrote the script and help coach her team. She also made the semi-finals in showmanship. Brody has been to 6 Junior Nationals and has always helped out with the cattle just waiting his turn in the show ring. This year was his second year showing a heifer and he has really improved. His heifer, Roxie, is so gentle that he can put a halter on her in a 2 acre trap. But on show day she was in heat. She was a little hard to handle, even for a grown man, much less a 55 pound boy. But Brody walked her in that show ring and held on and showed her perfectly well. We were sure proud of him. Harley was our top notch showman at the Junior National. Although she didn’t place in showmanship, many people told me that they would want her to show their cattle any day as she sure makes them look good. She did such an outstanding job “sticking” her heifer, Emerald, that the judge moved her up from 4th place to 2nd place. Watch for us on the road soon. We will be showing at Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston and San Angelo. Harley was selected as Texas Polled Hereford Sweetheart and she will make appearances at as many shows as possible
We have had a few winners in the past, including Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Heifer at the State Fair of Texas, several division winners in Fort Worth at the open show. Harley’s steer placed at Fort Worth and Koby’s steer was champion light weight steer in Houston. The kids are hoping for a few more wins in the near future. Right now we are feeding 6 heifers and 6 steers. There’s one or two more in the pasture that we might bring home, too. That sure keeps the kids busy at feeding time. We really enjoy both as they are very different. We like the fact that we get to keep the heifers in our herd to become favorite mama cows. But we also enjoy the profits that the steers bring to our college funds.
